Get to Work!
Issue 8 submissions open, updated submission guidelines, update on NMB Vol. 4, and a feature of Do You Know Me? by Lia Turpin from Issue 7—what more could you want?
Hello again, fruits! It’s Senior Editor Casper back with another fresh peel and I hope that you all had a lovely end of Pride. We know we did! Between getting Issues 5 & 6 in stock and 7 ready for preorder and throwing our very first virtual launch party, Fruitslice closed out Pride month with a bang!
We can’t wait to throw another virtual launch party, but to do that, we need a new issue!
Issue 8: Repair open for submissions now!
Issue 8 submissions are open now until the 20th! Submit here!
If you’ve been following us on here, you probably already have an idea of what we’re looking for, but just in case we have any new fruits in the bowl, I’ve added a theme description:
In addition to the theme description, these are the active columns for this issue and what their Senior Editors are looking for:
Changes to Guidelines
If you’ve submitted to us in the past, then you’re probably aware that we ask contributors to keep submissions under 1,500 words. However, we understand that short fiction under 1,500 words has its unique difficulties. So starting Issue 8, we are making an exception to our suggested word limit for fiction submissions. We ask that fiction submissions be kept at 2,250 words or under, given our limited space. We can’t wait to see what kinds of Queer fictional masterpieces we get this cycle!
Before you submit!
Make sure you read our most recent issue and acquaint yourself with the work we’re interested in and passionate about before sending your work to us.
Here’s one standout from Issue 7 from one of my (Senior Editor Casper) sections, The Body Politic. Please enjoy an excerpt of Do You Know Me? by Lia Turpin.
“I see fliers online—I see posts of all the girls at the Sapphic gatherings, the “Femmes-Only” clubs, and no one there looks like me. I see so many forms of gender expression, the kinds that easily make sense to others, but I don’t see myself among them. I see people whose identities and expressions tend to be understood without explanation—whose access to social affirmation, safety, and desirability is rarely questioned. And I notice how those perceptions are often shaped by whiteness, femininity, and the presumed neutrality of cis-adjacency, even in Queer spaces.”
You can continue reading Lia’s essay in Issue 7 here on pages 54-55!
Tune in for Vol 4 of Noise Made By!
In just one month, Noise Made By will be back with Vol 4: On the Pulse. We’re highlighting Queer artists on the come-up—celebrating artists living their personal dreams—across genres. Stay tuned for this volume’s release on August 1st!
Thank you so much to everyone who responded to our call for photography in May! We’re so excited to announce that in this upcoming issue of Noise Made By, we’ll be featuring photographers from every continent except Antarctica!
If you did not receive a publication request for Vol. 4, don’t worry! We received over 200 responses to our open call and are still in the process of filing all of them. We will always need photos, so keep an eye out for a message from noisemadeby@thefruitslice.com!
